"Winter weather struck us with a sudden thud. Snow began falling early Thursday evening and by Friday morning the ground was covered to depth of six inches or more. And then just as naturally as ever a cold wave followed the snow and Saturday morning we had the first zero weather of the winter. Sunday morning thermometers in Bellefonte registered ten degrees below zero while at various places in the county sixteen degrees below were recorded. Monday morning was still colder, the mercury dropping from twelve to eighteen below zero. But of one thing we are assured: This winter won't be as long as last winter was."

"While the thermometer on the surf ace registered 36 degrees above zero on Tuesday afternoon it was 20 degrees below zero at an altitude of four thousand feet. That is what the thermometer carried by the aviator who was flying over Bellefonte registered."
