Military Organizations

Bald Eagle Infantry

The Bellefonte Infantry

The Bellefonte Infantry was formed in 1840.  The first commissioned officers were J. H. Morrison, Captain; S. T. Shugert, First Lieut and John Montgomery Second Lieut.  The company was about fifty strong.

Their uniforms were blue with yellow trimmings.  Morrison and Shugert continued in their positions until the company disbanded in 1845. Montgomery was succeeded as second lieutenant by P. B. Wilson.

Centre Dragoons

The Centre Dragoons, a mounted organization, existed at least from 1854 to 1858.  They were commanded by Capt. Robert D. Cummings.  Anthony Carnar was first lieutenant, and Isaac Lose second lieutenant.

They wore a dark blue uniform and mustered about sixty horses.

Centre Infantry

After completing three month's service and eager to return to the task of defending the Union, in August 1861, Capt. William L. Raphill and 1st Lieutenant James P. Hughes recruited a company to enlist in the three year service.  Both had previously served in the three month service, having served as members of the Bellefonte Fencibles from April 19 to July 19, 1861.  Numbering between 75-80 men, they left Bellefonte on September 2 for Camp Curtin.  Upon arriving at Camp Curtin, it was determined that the company was insufficient to stand alone as a company and was combined with recruits from Lancaster County to form Company B, Forty-Fifth Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Centre Troop

The Centre Troop, a mounted organization, existed as early as 1831.  Little else is known about this group.

The Farmers and Mechanics Infantry

Although little about The Farmers and Mechanics Infantry is known, we do know, however, that it was formed in 1824, sometime after May. They were formed from men who were originally part of the Centre Guard, as certain elements within the Centre Guard, were upset as to the election of officers, resigned and organized The Farmers and Mechanics Infantry.  An newspaper announcement regarding the formation of the unit read: "Those belonging to the Guards allege that political distinctions is to be introduced in the new company.  Such is not the fact. The farmers and mechanics are on the one side, and the gentlemen or those who please to call themselves so on the other side."  Another announcement appeared in the Bellefonte Patriot which contained an announcement  and informing the members of the command to assemble on the 8th of January, 1825, to march in a parade at Milesburg.  The announcement was signed by Charles B. Callahan, orderly sergeant.

McAllister Rifles

Organized, in September 1861, by Austin B. Snyder and William H. Blair, "both of whom are well known to the public as men of firmness and bravery."  Prior to the company's departure on October 1st, Snyder had been elected Capt. and Blair 1st Lieutenant.  Both these men had already completed three months service as part of the Eagle Guards which served as Company of the 10th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers.  Arriving at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA, they were mustered into Company G of the Fifty-First Regiment for three years service.

Milesburg Infantry

Originally organized as part of the Home Guard in the Spring of 1861, under the command of Capt. J. Miles Green, in June they applied to be organized as part of the Pennsylvania Militia.  The Milesburg Infantry left Milesburg August 21, 1861, reporting to Camp Curtin in Harrisburg.  They were mustered into service as Company A of the Forty-Ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Penns Valley Infantry

In August of 1861, John Boal, organized this company, predominantly from the returning veterans of the Cameron Guards (Company H, 7th PA Vol. )  Leaving Bellefonte for Camp Curtin, by late August, they were mustered into service on August 31, 1861, as Company G of the Forty-Ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Union Invincibles

The Union Invincibles where organized in April of 1861, for home protection.  By August 22nd of that year, they were officially reorganized by Lieut. William McClelland (Brigade Inspector).

The commissioned officers elected were: Capt. Robert A. Cassidy; First Lieut., Calvin Wilson; and Second Lieut., Harry M. Steel. Non-commissioned officers, Third Lieut., Norman M. Hoover; First Sergeant, George B. Harris; First Corporal, James J. Brisbin; Second, William Grafius; Third, Andrew Morrison; Fourth, Jacob Roop.  They had been regarded, by some Bellefonte citizens, as the "boy company."     698
