In April 1861, at the call of Pennsylvania Governor, and Bellefonte native, Andrew G. Curtin, the Eagle Guards, Bellefonte Fencibles and Cameron Infantry reported to Camp Curtin, in Harrisburg, Pa., to be mustered into the service of the Federal Government. The Federal Army had a limit of 77 soldiers per company. As all three of these Centre Co. volunteer companies exceeded the limit, a new company, known as the Curtin Guard was formed and placed under the command of Bellefonte's Capt. John H. Stover.
After fulfilling their three month obligation, as part of the Tenth Regiment, Patterson's column, they returned to Bellefonte on Saturday, August 3rd, 1861. They returned "without the loss of any of their number."
