Cameron Guards

In September of 1859, the Brady Guards and the Penn's Valley Cadets merged into a single unit, which was named the Cameron Guards.  This new militia unit was organized by Pennsylvania Militia, Brigade Inspector, Autin B. Snyder.

In April of 1861 they received a letter from the Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth, calling upon them to march to Harrisburg immediately.  Headed by Capt. Robert McFarlane, they headed the called and were mustered into "three months" service on April 22, 1861, as Company H of the 7th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers.

As there was a limit of 77 men per company, the surplus of the Cameron Infantry, Eagle Guards and Bellefonte Fencibles, were then formed into another company, called the Curtin Guards, under command of our townsman, Capt. John H. Stover.

The 7th Regiment spent most the three months service in homeland defense, and were stationed near Chambersburg to protect the state against invasion by the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.     160
