The Bellefonte Greys were organized about 1832 . Charles B. Callahan was captain in 1833, and most likely also at their organization.
There uniform was grey trimmed in black. They wore a leather "bell crowned" helmet topped with a black plume. They numbered about fifty. Lieutenants in the organization were Reuben C. Hale and John H. Dopp.
In 1834 the Bellefonte Greys were attached to the volunteer battalion of Centre county, headquartered in the Nittany valley. John Smythe was in command with J. H. Morrison, as major.
James Gilliland succeeded Capt. Callahan in command of the Greys and he was succeeded by John H. Morrison. The Bellefonte Greys disbanded in 1839.
