Bellefonte historic board to inspect sound systems
By Lara Brenckle; lbrenckl@centredaily.com
"Plans for a sound system in downtown Bellefonte are moving forward, with a demonstration of several speaker systems set for Tuesday.
Sue Hannegan, the borough's planning and preservation coordinator and the assistant to the borough manager, said two or three kinds of speakers will be set on light poles around the Diamond. They will be inspected by members of the borough's Historic Architecture Review Board, who will determine if they fit aesthetically with the downtown streetscape.
In November, Bellefonte Borough Council gave the preliminary go-ahead to plans for the system, which will feature speakers around the downtown area to create sound "zones" that can be used for gatherings and parades, such as the Bellefonte Cruise.
The speakers would be operated through a main control room in the Chamber of Commerce headquarters or the borough building.
Funding for the system would come from HARB, and the borough would provide maintenance and manpower to install the speakers.
Should HARB agree on one of the speaker designs and its mountings, the group would make a recommendation to borough council. Council would then have to give final approval to the project.
Borough manager Ralph Stewart said a council member already has been appointed to work with a committee to coordinate the sound system's use policy."
