Prior to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania taking over the responsibility for capitol punishment, executions were held in the county in which the perpetrator was tried and convicted.
During this time, which encompassed more than 100 years of Centre County's early existence, there were several hangings. The first occurred in 1802 and the last occurred in 1911. Once in 1895, Centre County hanged two individuals, both convicted in the same murder case, on the same day.
We have provided within these pages, factual accounts of these occasions based upon information which appeared in local Bellefonte, and other newspapers.
The individual events are listed on the menu on the left of this page.
