First Property Owners

In addition to Bellefonte's founders, the following persons were among those who owned lots in the newly formed town: William Petriken, Adam McKee,  a lot on High street; Alexander Diven, a lot on High Street, John Hall, a lot on Spring street and Hugh Gallagher, a lot on Spring street.

The first house was Col. Dunlop's part of which can be seen in the picture above.  In addition to being Col. Dunlop's residence, it was used for the first courts that sat in the town in 1801.  The next house to be built was that of James Harris which stood near Willowbank, on the banks of Spring Creek.  Petriken's house was the third one and Adam McKee's tavern was fourth.  John Hall was a  blacksmith who had come to Bellefonte from Chester county at the urging of James Harris.  Hall built the first blacksmith shop in 1797 and in the same year Alex Divan built his house.  The Bellefonte forge was built in 1797 at the edge of town and three years later Dunlop's son-in-law, James Smith, built a grist mill.  Also in 1797, Roland Curtin opened a store.  It was't until 1807 that a great demand encouraged Harris to build a mill on the site of the Phoenix mill.
