St. Johns Reformed Church
St. Johns Reformed Church of Bellefonte was organized in 1836, by Rev. Ephraim Kleffer. In 1844, during the pastorate of Rev. W. R. Yearick they built their first church. This was a frame building, located on Linn street, at Spring St., and was utilized by both the Reformed and Lutheran congregations in an arrangement known as "a Union church." The Lutherans withdrew in 1858 when the Reformed congregation bought the building. This frame structure, in the spring of 1880, was damaged by fire, set by a newly installed furnace. Although the church could have been repaired, the congregation decided it best to build a new church. Work began almost immediately and the corner stone was laid on October 10th, 1880. The stone structure, built at a cost less than $15,000, was not completed until 1882, the consecration took place on November 27, 1882. Soon after the parsonage was also remodeled. Rev. A. M. Shmidt came in 1901, and during his pastorate, which lasted 24 years, a chapel was built.
United Evangelical Church
United Evangelical church of Bellefonte was organized under the pastorate of Rev. R W. Koontz, in 1889. For two years it was connected with the Milesburg church. In March 1892, it became a seperate charge. The church on Willowbank street was dedicated by Bishop W. M. Stanford, in October, 1892. In March, 1893, Rev. G. E. Zebner, who is serving his third year, became the pastor. The present membership is 50. The Sunday school numbers 140. The Keystone League of Christian Endeavor has 30 active and 22 associate members. The work of the congregation is very encouraging. The church is a neat frame structure occupying a large lot overlooking Logan's Branch. It is of modern architecture and a most creditable evidence of the earnestness of a small congregation.
United Brethren in Christ
The organization of the United Brethren in Christ dates to the 1820s. The original church was a log building erected about 1825. Their present site was purchased in 1830 for $50. Shortly after the church was built on the site. In 1855 the old log church was replaced by a frame structure. The building was again replaced in 1891 by a brick structure which has a capacity of 400. 1895 membership numbered 125.
St John Episcopal Church
The origin if the Protestant Episcopal church in Bellefonte may be traced to the incident of the arrivial in the town in 1825, of Mrs. Harriet Wilson and her sister, Mrs. James Gregg, of York, who visited here in search of health. Shortly after their arrival they were visited by Mr. Piggott. Upon finding two other Episcopalian families in town, he determined to hold public services. Bellefonte was soon designated as a regular mission station, and supplied from Lewistown until the organization of the parish in 1836. The first church was built in 1842 and the rectory in 1843. During 1869 the house of worship at Allegheny and Lamb streets was built upon a lot donated by Mrs. J. T. Hale and Dr. E. W. Hale, and the old house sold to the Lutheran congregation. The new church cost them about $18,000. The rectory on Lamb street was erected by William F. Reynolds in 1877 and presented to the church.
Society of Friends
Among the early residents of the town were several Quaker families from Chester county - the Valentines, Thomases, Millers and Irwins. It was not however until 1832, that the membership of the Friends seemed sufficient to warrant the erection of a house of worship, located on Logan street. As was the custom, meetings were held regularly twice a week. By 1895 the congregation numbered fifteen families. The Friends graveyard was laid out in 1837. Also in 1837 they united with the Orthodox Friends. The building was in use until World War I.
Baptists Church
The Baptists organized a congregation in 1876 which was maintained for a number of years. As of 1895, there was no pastor and no district organization. Disciples
The Disciples had a church organization for a number of years but as of 1895 it no longer existed. Seventh Day Adventists
The Seventh Day Adventists originally organized a congregation about 1895. They held services every Saturday in the old Methodist church building on east High street.
